In Illinois, only novelty types of fireworks are legal. About anything that shoots off is illegal.

"Once you fire it off, you don't know where it's going to go or hit. It could be the neighbors garage with a door open and a gas can sitting there," Creve Coeur Police Chief Mike Button says.

Chief Button says he has bigger concerns when it comes to people who drink excessively and shoot off fireworks or let their kids do it without supervision.

"In a nutshell, it's stupidity. You get people drinking, you get people with fireworks, they just don't mix like drinking and driving don't. Our biggest concern is that parents want to be the good guy and buy their kids lots of fireworks and then fail to monitor them. It seems the emergency room gets a half dozen kids that get injured because there's no supervision once they give them to them," Button says.

Chief Button says he calls in extra officers over the 4th holiday to help with calls.

Many local towns have even tougher ordinances on fireworks like sparklers are illegal in the city of Peoria.
