It's one class project that's stretching way beyond school grounds.
Students at Pontiac Township High School developed the Prescription Drug Disposal Program about five months ago.
Their mission:
To spread the word about the damage done to the environment by simply throwing away old medications.
They encouraged people in Pontiac to bring leftover prescriptions to their pharmacists.
Now, McLean County and OSF St Joseph's Medical Center are next on the lesson plan, and it's a change local experts say is long overdue.
Mike Novario, the Director of Pharmacy at OSF St. Joseph, said, "Different ways in which to dispose of these items needed to be established, and that's what Pontiac has done, and that's what we're hoping to bring to McLean County."
Pontiac teacher Paul Ritter says he's amazed, but not surprised at his students' accomplishments.
The Ecology teacher at Pontiac Township High School said, "That's the beauty of everything. It's kids educating kids, kids educating communities, and communities taking it out to the world. It's unbelievable, it's so amazing."
The P2 D2 program in McLean will kick off at OSF St. Joseph parking lot on Saturday, June 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
