Victims Take Stand In Pelo Trial

By Gina Ford

A third victim testified this afternoon in the Jeff Pelo rape trial in McLean County.

She said her assault happened in April of 2003. She testified her attacker bound her hands first with a zip tie...then later with duct tape.
The victim said her attacker put tape over her eyes, mouth and head before covering it with a pillow case.

After the initial assault, she testified he made her get in a bathtub before he finally left.

After waiting she said she freed herself and called police.

Weeks later in a police photo lineup, she said Jeff Pelo stood out, but she did not positively identify him.

Today in court, she said, "those were the eyes I saw in my nightmares regularly."

Earlier in the day a second alleged victim took the stand against Jeff Pelo.

In testimony that was tearful at times, the woman said the former police sergeant broke into her home in the early morning hours of January 4th of 2005.

During the attack the alleged victim says she talked to her rapist a lot and that annoyed him.

She testified, " He said he had been watching me for a while and commented that I never lock my doors and said I had almost caught him a few times."

The woman identified Pelo in a line-up afterwards and again today in court...noting that he looks a little more skinny and old now.

One of the four women he is accused of raping says she intentionally
rode the courthouse elevator with him before one of his court
appearances.

The woman testified Tuesday that she wanted to see the former
Bloomington police officer to see how he would react to her and to gain control over a situation that had traumatized her.

Of the three victims so far, all have testified that their attacker:

Made them each sit in a tub towards the end of their attack...

Bound each of them using zip-ties...

All described their attacker as being about six foot two...

And, all indicated he told them he had stalked them before they were attacked.

In addition, two of the witnesses quoted their rapist as saying, "I don't want to hurt you",

And two described their attacker as having a "lumbering walk'.

McLean County Assistant State's Attorney Mark Messman expects there should be about nine more days of witness testimony.

Pelo has pleaded not-guilty to the 35 charges of raping four women and stalking a fifth. If convicted of all charges, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

I am the cousin of Sarah Gliege. I am so proud of her and all the other women who are taking a stand against their attacker. You all are courageous and deserve nothing but peace and happiness. I wish you all the best!

We teach our children to respect and trust our police officers when we call them for help. There have been so many issues lately with police officers (I realize they are human, too) concerning drinking and driving causing 6 car pile-ups, now rapes and assaulting women. What do we now tell our children when they are able to read for themselves what the police officers are doing and why aren't they being held accountable for their actions when the public holds them to a higher standard? How sad
