Peoria Public Works Director David Barber said, "This is only residential, this is the side streets, not the through streets or the major streets through town."

After fielding several requests from area citizens, Barber says the city is considering changing the speed limit to 25 miles per hour to cut down on speeding.

"People drive by habit and watch their surroundings to some extent, we need to put signs up to remind them that the speed limit is 25 miles per hour," said Barber.

Residents on Northcrest Drive in Peoria say the speed limit has been 25 miles per hour on their road for several years.

Greg Santon said, "We get a lot of people who cut through. This is the only one that goes through from University and Sheridan. I see people zooming down here all the time."

Steve Rouland added, "I think it varies according to the neighborhood you're in. I don't know if you need a blanket speed limit."

But the residents say even if the speed limit is lowered that doesn't mean motorists will pay attention.

"I think if the city would educate the people to do that. People don't even know it," said Santon.

If the city council approves the speed change, the director of Peoria Public Works says the changes would take place over the next couple of years with a price tag of $200,000.

You can change speed limits all you want, but it will not make a difference to some drivers. We live on Grosenbach rd. in Wahsington and fought to get speed limit signs up. Well, they got posted, but drivers are still speeding on our road and you can't get police dept. to set up radar. Guess we'll have to wait until someone gets seriously injured!!
