Students Participate In Polar Cap Experiment

By Syreeta Baker

It was an all white dress code on the lawn of Lakeview Museum in Peoria. Hundreds of kids donned white apparel to reflect light into space today.

Students from Central Illinois participated in NASA's world wide Albedo Project.

Dressed in all white, the kids formed the shape of an iceberg on the museum's lawn.

The project's goal was to raise awareness about the link between melting polar ice caps and global warming.

Lakeview Museum Planetarium Director Sheldon Schafer said, "This is how they can measure from space 450 miles across white spot that's this size based on its reflectivity. And we're also calling attention to what's happening in the arctic, which is one for the areas of serious concern."

NASA satellites orbiting overhead took the groups picture while measuring the amount of reflectivity.

Science Centers across the world are having students take part in the Albedo Experiment until May 24.

Our 32 student from Lincoln Magnet School in Springfield loved the activity and excitedly shared their experience with peers--thus, evidence of a job well done!!
