New numbers are out on how powerful the wind can potentially be. A US Energy Department report this week says wind can power 20% of the country's electricity by 2030. Wind currently accounts for just one percent on the grid.
Rene Taylor's Ellsworth farmhouse sits in a wind tunnel surrounded by skyscraping turbines that are just too much for her and her family.
"The noise this past winter, we had I say 30% of the time where we could hear the thumping inside of our house," Taylor says.
For wind to produce 20% of our electricity, it will take more than 75,000 new turbines that likely would tower even higher than the 265 foot towers in McLean County.
"I don't think unless you're going to sacrifice the views of a lot of area and the comfort levels of lots of citizens, that it's worth 75,000 new ones," Taylor says.
"The question is if not wind energy, how are we going to get the electricity we need to meet the demand," Illinois State University Economics Professor David Loomis says.
Loomis is helping start a first of its kind degree program this fall at Illinois State University. Classes are already full as students seek a major in renewable energy.
"We're very excited because this means jobs for the future, and we're hoping to train the future workforce," Loomis says.
For Rene Taylor, it's a future in a different house as the wind turbines have turned her off from country living in Ellsworth.
There are a handful of wind farms online locally with another handful proposed. If you'd like to see those locations and whether your home is in a hot spot for wind power production, check out the links to the side of this story.

Rather than using wind generators, I much prefer using solar cells for generating electricity and also using solar to heat water. Solar is much less obtrusive and enables homeowners to be more independent of energy corporations. For me energy independence is what's important; indpendent of foreign oil and independent of American energy corporation should be our goal.
