A New Set of Wheels

By Emily West

With Gasoline prices skyrocketing many people are driving less and looking for ways to save money.

In the Peoria area... bicycle enthusiasts are trying to encourage others to ride or walk to work this week.

This is National Bike-to-Work Week.

Rob Kazlauski lives in East Peoria and peddles to his job in West Peoria.
He says bike riding has benefits beyond saving gas money.

Kazlauski said, "I wish more people were biking to work. Not only is it good for the air, and environmentally good, but I just think it's a good healthy way for people to get motivated."

Ken Kiley, a member of Friends of the Rock Island Trail said, "Good for fitness. You can get to work and it's a lot more enjoyable. You don't have to worry about parking and traffic and you just have a good time."

Each morning riders are meeting at different locations throughout the area and then riding to work together.

Wednesday, a group is meeting at the "Morton trail head" at six in the morning.

It is illegal in most cities for cyclists to ride on the sidewalk. They belong on the roadway and have the same rights and responsibilities as cars, trucks, motorcycles. Obviously "unconcerned" is looking for a ticket or a trip to jail for ignoring those rights.

As long as they stay on the sidewalk and out of my way they will get a health benefit too!

I started riding to work the past couple of weeks. It's nice to be able to use the Consititution Trail part of the way. Plus I'm getting a good work out /Cross training that will work with my 1/2 Marathon training this summer.
