The senior residents of Court Place in Pekin are helping stuff stockings today for the Operation Santa project.

The volunteers are filling small white packets with candy, which have a personalized note on the outside.

Last year, more than 23,000 stockings were shipped overseas and several troops sent "thank you" letters to the residents.

Alberta Anderson said, "They were thrilled that the American people really do care and a lot of them are very lonely."

Operation Santa organizer Patti Smith said, "Operation Santa is the largest Christmas drive for the troops in the Midwest and now the country, thanks to the good people of Central Illinois."

Patti Smith hopes to send 30,000 this year, which is the fourth year for the effort. The stockings will be shipped in November.
