Early Morning Not Tough For Teens

Getting up at four or five o'clock on a Saturday morning may not be the easiest thing to do for teenagers or young adults. But, when it comes to events like Komen Peoria Race for the Cure parents do not have to do as much prodding compared to other weekends.

This year's Komen Peoria Race for the Cure was the first one for 19-year-old Amber Sanders. Amber's mother Theresa Schultz says she was not sure if Amber was thrilled about getting up so early to attend the race.

"She's not an early morning person. She did a good job, and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be to get her up and out," Schultz says.

Sanders says if she can do it so can lots of other young people.

"Just for awareness, if breast cancer runs in your family you need to be aware of it. It's never to early to start."

Unlike Sanders, some other teenagers began attending the race several years ago for different reasons.

"I just like to come out and see all the people who are participating and the survivors and it's fun," 11-year-old Keanna Nichelson says.

"It's really amazing to see how many pink shirts are here and how many survivors there are and just like really open your eyes to see how you can really fight cancer," 16-year-old Alex Kinzinger says.

Margaret Morris watched her aunt Jackie Hicks fight breast cancer four years ago. Hicks now attends the race. Morris joined her cousins for the first time at the event to show support for her aunt.

"It's for a good cause, and I just look at it as doing something good for the community and for all those who went through all this," Morris says.

Amber Sanders' mother says it's good to see younger people embracing the cause for breast cancer. She encourages more of them to do the same.

"Just to get out and do something good you know raise money so that maybe one day our kids won't have to face this. They won't have to deal with it," Schultz says.
