The old joke about cops and donuts is turning into real money for people with special needs.

Police throughout the state of Illinois are on rooftops today.

In Peoria, officers are camped out on top of the Dunkin' Donuts stores on Knoxville, Sterling and University.

They are raising money for the annual Torch Run that benefits Special Olympics.

Peoria Police Sargent Joe Benko says, "It's pretty endeavoring adventure. The ladder was a little scary getting up here. The weather is nice. But the sunrise was beautiful coming up."

The officers will be at the Dunkin' Donuts until two Friday afternoon.

Last year the statewide event raised almost 100 thousand dollars for Special Olympics.
