Workers say the Governor is playing politics again with their livelihood. This is the second time in four years where Governor Rod Blagojevich has called for the closure of the maximum-security prison in Pontiac.

One worker believes the prison will ultimately stay open, but the Governor and Department of Corrections are using it as a bargaining chip since the worker's contract expires in July.

He said, "It's all to get us scared and say please don't take our jobs. But, we'll be willing not to take a raise and that's exactly what's going to happen."

The scare-tactic worked on Mayor Scott McCoy who with State Senator Dan Rutherford are ready to fight the Governor again.

McCoy said, "Even if it doesn't happen, it's something that gets people worried and they don't need that right now. And, I don't think he takes that into consideration. Unfortunately for our Governor, we're fly-over country."

The plan changed today when a Joliet prison slated to close was kept open. Now, Pontiac will close with its 1,600 plus inmates going to a recently built facility in Thomson.

The mayor says the prison is one of the three largest employers in Pontiac with more 500 workers.

Does the governor read these, does anyone get the input of the ppl back to him in CHICAGO? Thompson is not even a safe prison! They cut costs building it to SAVE money. ANd we are going to put criminals there and let our husband and wives put there lives on the line in an unsafe prison because the governor got his feelings hurt by republicans. WHy can we not impeach him. He lied to us in his campaign and shouldbe held accountable!

Todays PJStar says the state legislators want a raise, you can't take state jobs away to save money and then turn around and give yourselves raises, this guy is unbelievable! Pontiac should remain open, there is far too overcrowding as is and our prison workers are already at risk! I am sure if Rod dug deep enough he could see where he alone is blowing our budget. Let's just close all the prisons Rod and then what will we have? Convicted convicts running the streets. They would be your only vote

I think it stinks that the Gov. is trying to close any prison. Our prisons are already over filled as it is. This just puts our correctional officers at more risk than before. It also is sad that a Gov. who was elected due to the support of the correctional union has done nothing but stab them in the back ever since. Not to mention that he thinks he is too good to live in the Gov Mansion like all the Govs before him.

Did we figure out if we could impeach this govenor or simply vote to remove him from office. We have to do something before he causes this state any more damage & I thought Ryan was bad!!

the governor should give up pay raises and live in Springfield instead of wasting money flying back and forth, and call special sessions that no one wants to attend. no wonder he is against the recall law. he would be losing his high paying job

That's it...close another prison so that our remaining understaffed facilities have to deal with the result. Taking jobs away from state employees is not the solution. It didn't help any when they closed the work camp at Hanna City. It just left a lot of people unemployeed.

seriously, why is he our governor, no one likes him and the stuff he does does not benefit the majority of the citizens of Illinois. Impeach him!

I retired from Pontiac C C 6 yrs ago, Of the people hat retired none have been replaced, so you can see the amount of money it is costing tghe state for overtime because you can not refuse overtime. But the Gov needs to save money by moving to Springfield where he belongs and the people of the state should stop paying his flight bill backe and forth. If he can't hire people to replace the people that retired where is he going to get the money to hire guards and etc for the new prison???.

to save money the state of IL should get rid of the governor

The gov. is running the state down the tubes. If its in chicago thats ok. But anywhere else in the state to bad.

Why doesnt the govenor live in the govenors mansion?? Wouldn't this save the state money by him not flying from Chicago to Springfield? He needs to start with saving money with himself.

Tuesday, May 6 at 5:44 AM HERES ONE !!!!!!!!!!! wrote ...

How about let our Govenor try and live on our wage , and deal with guys like him threatening to shut our jobs down . And let him worry about how he is going to feed his kids. Come on down State and live like we do for awhile.

If Gov Blah wants to save the State money, he would move to Springfield and not fly back and forth to Chicago! On a more logical approach, he may close the facility but it would cost millions to abate the facility of asbestos, Pontiac would have one old landmark sitting abandoned, the State would still need to pay for upkeep so where's the savings?

AFTER 100 PLUS YEARS IT MAY BE TIME TO CLOSE BECAUSE OF UP KEEP, BUT WITH UP COMING CONTRACTS THIS SURE LOOKS STRANGE BUT THEN AGAIN ANY THING THIS GOVERNOR DOES IS STRANGE

If the governor wants to save the state money, maybe he should move to Springfield and save all of us tax payers money with his travel cost. I bet that would save the prison some money!

I find it hard to believe that closing the Pontiac facility would save that much money. The solution to the budget is to eliminate the "Big Dogs" who are in there jobs because of politics and are getting paid too much money. There are too many Chiefs in Chicago.

Monday, May 5 at 5:04 PM Martha wrote ...

Why don't the governor give up his raise along with the others in Springfield, and the Pontiac Prison can remain open. Why take away all those jobs just trying to make himself look good! it's too late for that!

if surving isn't hard enough already now the gov. wants to take my husbands job? he might as well take my house and cars too. better yet the food right out of my kids mouth!
