There's new information tonight about the gunman who went on a shooting rampage at Northern Illinois University. Steve Kazmierczak killed five people in a lecture hall Thursday before killing himself.

The 27-year-old graduate student spent time in a Chicago Psychiatric Center after high school. Jarrod Rice was on the Today show Saturday morning to talk about, Kazmierczak, his former neighbor.

"He was a quiet guy. He kind of kept to himself. He wasn't really friendly with us and the other people on the floor. I always thought that was maybe because he was a little older than everybody else on the floor. He was about 23 at that time and we were all 19-years old, 18-years old. He kind of kept to himself and was quiet and studious. It seemed like he was in his room a lot and his door was almost always shut. I never saw it open," Rice said.

Police say Kazmierczak left behind a duffel bag - with the zippers glued shut - in a DeKalb motel room where he checked in days before his shooting rampage. The Associated Press reports a bomb squad safely opened the bag. Police would not comment on what was found in the bag.

Northern Illinois has canceled all classes next week. NIU President John Peters says faculty and staff are being asked to return Tuesday to receive training to help students as they return to campus.

Classes will resume Monday, February 25th. NIU Sporting events will be canceled through Sunday, February 24th. That's the same day a memorial service is being planned on campus.

Cole Hall -- where the shooting took place -- will remain closed
for the rest of the semester.
