Unit Five Plans To Expand

By Jenny Li

Unit 5 school board Wednesday night looked at construction plans to meet the future needs of its growing student population.

The plans include two new elementary schools, one at Cedar Ridge and one at Grove and Kickapoo Creek.
Sugar Creek Elementary would also be expanded, while other selected elementary schools would be renovated.
It also proposes a new middle school, location to be named later.
The entire project costs more than $96 million.

"Building to have enough room for every student to have a desk and a classroom is very important to us right now," said Unit Five Superintendent Dr. Gary Niehaus. "With the additions we are going to have, we don't plan to do anything less than all of our schools and all of our classrooms in the district used."

The Normal school board will take action on a referendum on November 28th to fund the plan.
If passed, the referendum will appear on the February 5th primary ballot.
