Peoria County Bird Tests Positive For West Nile Virus

By Jim Garrott

The Peoria City-County Health department announced today that a blue jay collected August 27, in Peoria County has tested positive for west nile virus.

It is the first positive bird reported in Peoria County this year. No human case of the virus has been seen in Peoria County to date.

The mosquito-borne disease is transmitted through the bit of a mosquito that is infected by feeding on an infected bird.

Last year ten people died in Illinois as a result of west nile virus.
