New Technology Makes Eye Surgery Easier

By Emily West

Some people find wearing eyeglasses or contact lens a hassle and the costs to replace them can add up.

There is an option. It is called vision correction surgery. At one Peoria business more than 500 patients get the surgery every year.

Mike Schorr is looking forward to life without glasses.

He said, "Since high school, so 30 years. You pray you don't lose them. You get straps. You get everything you can. I've already lost one pair this year, 500 dollars down the drain."

He's getting prepped for his vision correction surgery at Bond Eye Associates and the Illinois Valley Eye Laser Institute.

"Hopefully starting in 4-5 hours I won't have to wear these glasses."

Doctor William Bond is performing this eye surgery on the newest and most advanced Food and Drug Administration approved machine for vision correction surgery, the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q, an upgraded version of current Lasik technology.

Dr. Bond said, "This is an upgrade in many ways."

The time the laser needs to cut or reshape the cornea now only last a couple seconds, half the time the pervious machine took.

Everyone is worried that they're going to look around during their lasik.

But with this new machine and that's not a problem. The laser stops when the eye moves.

"It has the laser hook into where it needs to go. You have the precise amounts delivered to the precise place that they need."

For Mike Schorr, he notices a difference right when he sits up and walks out of the room.

"I can see things, and read things that I couldn't see before... it's a little fuzzy right now, but that will go away."

And the doctor says with this new technology, the recovery time is significantly quicker for patients.

Getting back to their normal activities the day after surgery.

Doctor Bond says there are some side effects, usually depending on the person.

The price for the surgery on both eyes is about four thousand dollars.
