Illinois And Other States Sue Tobacco Company

By Eric Shangraw

Six states, including Illinois, are accusing R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company of violating a nine-year-old ban on the use of cartoons to support cigarette ads.

The states are filing lawsuits today to target a section in the November edition of Rolling Stone.

The magazine combines nine pages of Camel cigarette ads and pages of magazine-produced illustrations around the theme of independent rock music.

California, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington also are suing.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan accuses R.J. Reynolds of using its ads ``to lure young people into a deathly habit.''
