With gasoline costs approaching four dollars a gallon you might pay more to get flowers delivered to mom this mother's day weekend.

Some floral shops like many other companies using vehicles for service, try to find ways to recoup rising gasoline and shipping fees.

Bloomington flower shop manager Cathy Thomas increased delivery costs earlier this year to try and offset rising gasoline prices. Thomas says due to higher gas costs, she prefers to limit deliveries to the Twin Cities.

The manager of the Original Niepagen Flower Shop said, "Probably two years ago they were four, then we went up to five and then at the first of the year we jumped up to six....out of towns have also gone up to 10."

"We've had to raise some prices on some of our plants and our fresh flowers and just everything."

Thomas and staff have received lots of orders for Mother's Day and they will try and run tighter delivery schedules.

At Growing Grounds Garden Center and Florist, customers are not paying more for delivery service this year. But Floral manager Julie Pogue says they are trying to recover costs in other ways.

"We're just careful that when we go out we phone the recipients and make sure that someone is home.....we take as many as we can per load."

Even though higher fuel prices might be pinching budgets for florist, Pogue says costs here in Central Illinois are still lower compared to bigger cities.

"I found this out at Christmas when I was calling other florists in other towns their delivery costs went from $7.95 to $12.95 and even more."

Both florists say they hope gasoline prices level off, but if they keeping climbing customers could see even higher fees.
