You Gotta Eat: Garner's Pizza & Wings

By Eric Shangraw

An old pizza favorite has re–emerged in Peoria.

Eric Shangraw goes for lunch at Garner's Pizza and Wings in this week's You Gotta Eat.

Garner's Pizza and Wings was on Sterling Avenue in Peoria for years. Now the original owner, Dan Garner, has gone to North Allen Road for his latest venture. He says his original customers are going ga–ga for that super thin, almost anorexic crust.

"Tons and tons of people that ate at the Sterling store have been coming in and saying they are glad we are back in Peoria," says Garner.

Garner took over the sight of the Pizza Factory after it closed. He has kept the same décor.

"The ownership is good. It is dependable food. And it is a good value," said customer Mark Nelan.

"This was actually my first time here. I enjoyed the wings. They come in the same basket as the fries and the sauces one into one another. So it is a deal where you get two for the price of one," said customer Zach Neff.

Photographer Larry Foulk and I each ordered the pizza and wing combo. The pizza is made fresh and cooks in five minutes in what must be five thousand degree ovens. Okay, maybe five–hundred degrees.
The pizza is terrific if you love the thin crust. We ordered wings with a mild sauce. The mils tastes more like a medium. Larry ventured a sample of the 9–1–1 hot sauce on a wing. His eyes didn't water and his lips didn't bleed, so it wasn't that hot.
We also had a side order of fresh cut made on the premises French fries. Hot greasy–goodness!

Our bill with drinks, which include free refills, $17.46.
If you want pizza crust as thin as paper, get yourself to Garners.

Garner's is on North Allen Road in the Prairie Pointe Shopping Center... that is right across the street from Super Wal-Mart and Menards.
They are open seven days a week. 11am-10pm. (309)690-9464.
