You Gotta Eat: La Familia

By Eric Shangraw

A Peoria restaurant is priding itself on serving authentic Mexican food.
Eric Shangraw goes to La Familia in this week's You Gotta Eat.

La Familia is on North Wisconsin.
The nondescript exterior is in line with the bright white interior.
But elegant décor and delicious flavor don't have to correlate.
The flavors here are real south of the boarder. -No fast food Americanized cuisine.

"This is way different because this is real Mexican food. It is better than Taco Bell," said Edgar Roman. His father owns the business.

"ou can go to any other restaurant but the food is not authentic Mexican. This is real Mexican food," said Felipe Davila, a native of Mexico.

"his is my first time eating here and I found it to be pleasant so I will eat here gain," said customer Terry Payton.

" really like the guacamole. I think the presentation of the guacamole was very pretty and appealing," said customer Teresa Brown.

The pretty guacamole is made from fresh avocados when you order. The chips to dip in the "guac" are also homemade. We started with the "guac" appetizer.
Video journalist Michelle Mantel ordered the Enchiladas Suizas. The only problem, when it was served, oops, I started eating it.
Three rolled totillas stuffed with cheese and beef or chicken. It came with rice and lettuce and a nice sauce.
I ordered the chicken taco, beef tostada and tamale, served with rice and beans. Michelle is mellow enough to roll with my mistake. She happily consumed my order.
We both had bottled soda. Mine was a mandarin drink from Mexico.
It was all fine and filling.
Our bill: 22–dollars plus tip. La Familia is a favorite for lovers of a real Mexican menu.

La Familia is open daily from nine in the morning until nine at night.
They do serve breakfast items all day long. They are at 2007 North Wisconsin. (309)685-8477.

We ate at La Familia this summer and loved it! You dont get real mexican food like this anywhere else. The staff was friendly and the store next door sells many great mexican grocery items.
