Mom always says the first meal of the day is the most important.
News 25's Eric Shangraw goes for breakfast at "Childers Eatery" in this week's You Gotta Eat.
Childers Eatery is a hot spot for breakfast in Peoria.
No quiet coffee and croissants, Childers clamors with character.
You'll see the ROMEO club at 9:30 Thursday mornings: Retired Old Men Eating Out.
Nick and Ryan Childers are running their dad's business on the morning we bellied up for breakfast.
"You want the restaurant to run a particular way and to your expectations. When you’re not there sometimes the ball gets dropped because you’re not there to supervise. From a young age our Dad instilled that in both of us," said Nick Childers.
"I like it because of the atmosphere. It has kind of a homey feel. When you come here there is always a lot of conversation," said customer Mike Auschuetz.
"The people that work here have great personalities. They take care of you and make sure your coffee is always full," said customer Chad Robinson.
Photographer Doug Smith ordered the Banana Stuffed French Toast. Talk about presentation! The bananas are sliced in the shape of a star with a dollop of whipped cream and cherry. The whole plate is sprinkled in powdered sugar.
Doug dug in fast and furious amazed at the uniform flatness of his side order of bacon.
I had the Southwest Scrambler.
It comes with chorizo, green onions, tomatoes, Monterey Jack cheese and a homemade salsa you add on your own.
I choose the asparagus in hollandaise sauce as a side. First time I ever ate asparagus in the AM hours.
It won't be the last. Throw in a big mug of fresh black coffee, and this was a morning meal with zing!
Our bill: $21.07 plus tip.
Childers also offers lunch and dinner menu items. But its' breakfast is a signature that sizzles in Peoria.
Childers Eatery is at 3312 North University in Peoria.
They are open daily from 5am-8:30pm. Sunday they close at 4pm.
Breakfast is served all day long.
