Here's a deal that is hard to pass up ... because it really is free.
You can dispose of tires today and tomorrow for free at the FOLEPI Festival Building in East Peoria.
You can discard up to one thousand tires of all kinds, except no off-road tires.
This is a one-time opportunity offered by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Tazewell County Health Department, city of East Peoria and Peoria City/County Health department. The hope is to stop the spread of West Nile Virus.
The Tazewell County Health Department's Sara Sparkman said, "Tires that are sitting around collect water. Water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes so that's one of the main reasons we encourage people to get rid of their tires just sitting around."
One man who stopped to recycle his tires said, "You can get rid of an eye sore and it costs you nothing except whatever gas is."
Tires are being collected until 4:00 p.m. today and then from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
