Every once in a while someone comes along who can motivate us to do what we once thought we couldn't.

A group of kids at Washington's Central Grade School say a teacher there inspires greatness in all of his students.

That's why they nominated Joe Snyder for the Golden Apple award.

A lot has changed since Joe Snyder taught his first social studies class at Central School.

"We had a lot of Kiss fans in the building. Convoy was big on the radio."

That was in 1974.

"As a matter of fact, in my first year here, Mr. Heinz, our superintendent, was in my homeroom."

Snyder eventually switched to teaching PE and coaching basketball and track.

He's handed out high-fives for more than 30 years...motivating students to never settle for second best.

Kiley Ruder nominated Snyder and said, "He makes you work ten times harder than you want to."

But Snyder will tell you it's the students who raise his spirits.

"I always like to say that they've made a bigger impact on my life."

Humble for sure...But, a great teacher can never tell where his influence stops.

So, as Snyder prepares to retire this month, his students nominate him for the Golden Apple award.

Ben Misselhorn calls Snyder his hero.

"He's just been an amazing gym teacher, coach, partner, friend and a hero as well and I just think all of that will be remembered for years to come."

And Snyder says he'll always remember the day his students surprised him with this special salute.

"I love you. You guys know that!"

And Mr. Snyder, they certainly love you!

In his final weeks of teaching, Snyder gets to spend 500 dollars, courtesy of Bank Plus, on classroom supplies and perhaps a pizza party for his students.

He'll also drive a new car from Uftring Chevy Saab for the next month.
